Self-drive Packages

The name “Adventure” will take its entire signification if you decide to drive in Nicaragua. Before you take this option, you have to be aware that driving conditions are very different from what you’re used to: unless roads are in good or acceptable conditions in most of places, some of the roads will have lots of potholes; once you leave the main roads, you can find yourself in very bad driving conditions; and, the most important to notice, there are very few road signs, but people are always very helpful to help find your way (although the information is not always reliable, mostly regarding time and distances…).

Be cautious while driving. If people don’t drive fast here (that’s the very good news), you will see many trucks or so-called that are 20, 30 years old or more (that’s still good news) you will frequently see cows or horses crossing or just sitting in the highways and you will see very few drivers respecting the traffic signs or just elementary driving regulations.

So we don’t say don’t drive, we just invite you to be careful while driving and recommend not to drive after dark (6.00. pm) in the countryside as many vehicles or horse-drawn carriages don’t have any light at all! Defensive driving at all times is the key.

One thing about renting a car in Nicaragua: be very careful when you receive the vehicle from the car rental company. Due to the roads conditions, cars get damaged fast here… So check the car and make sure that any visible imperfection (scratches etc) will be written in the contract, Nicaragua Adventures does not accept any liability for that. The rules and policies regarding car rental in Nicaragua are even more in favor of the company than they are in the more developed countries.

We offer a wide range of vehicles, from normal sedans, small or larger 4x4 and minibuses (See “rent a car/van). Although a 4WD is not necessary most of the time, it is way more comfortable and safe than a small sedan.

We offer below 3 different sample itineraries. We did not include the Caribbean coast and the San Juan River as it is impossible to reach those places driving. You can either drive yourself the whole time, or just have it for a few days –you might not need a car while at the beach and you will certainly not need a car while at Corn Island or touring the San Juan River area- !
