Volcanoes Cocktail

Discover 5 volcanoes in just one week time: Mombacho and its natural reserve; Masaya, National Park hosting 5 craters; Ometepe Island, with the Concepcion located 5 300 ft above see level and Maderas and its cloud forest. Cerro Negro, which last huge eruption was in 1999.

8 days, 7 nights

A lot of hike is included in this package, so you really need to be in shape. The highlight of our trip will be the Concepcion, active volcano overlooking the Ometepe Island and Lake Nicaragua. 6 to 7 hours will be necessary to reach the top of this mountain! The lodging will be simple but always clean and charming.

Day 1 : Managua airport-Managua

Arrive in Managua. Transfer and accommodation in your hotel. Night in the hotel.

Day 2 : Managua-Catarina-Ometepe Island

From Managua, we first will stop and have lunch at the Mirador de Catarina, place offering a magnificent view towards Lake Nicaragua and the Islets, the Mombacho volcano and natural reserve and a crater Lake. transfer to San Jorge to take the ferry to Ometepe Island. Arrival in your lodge in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in the Lodge.

Day 3 : Ometepe Island-Maderas volcano & Natural Reserve in Ometepe Island

Go for a early hike to the Maderas Volcano and reach its waterfall and explore the cloud forest. You can observe a lot of wildlife, such as birds and monkeys. Once back in the lodge, free afternoon to enjoy the beach and relax swimming in Lake Nicaragua. Kayaks and mountain bike available. Dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Day 4 : Ometepe Island-Concepcion volcano in Ometepe Island

You will get up very early and go for the most unforgettable day of your trip: hike the Concepcion volcano. Situated 5 300 ft above see level, it has a perfect conic shape and smoke always goes out from its crater. Once in the top you will have a wonderful 360 degrees view. Snacks en route, guide and sherpa.
Back to the lodge in the afternoon. Dinner and night in the lodge.

Day 5 : Ometepe Island-Masaya National Park & volcano-Granada

Leave Ometepe Island, take the ferry back to the firm land and drive north. Go for a day tour in the Masaya area: in the morning we’ll visit the Masaya active volcano and national park. Hike the San Fernando crater, a trail goes all the way around the crater (extinct). Impressive views to the valley and Masaya lagoon. Visit the small museum dedicated to volcanoes history in Nicaragua. After this we’ll visit the Handicraft Market in Masaya City, here you will find the most delicate works. Typical lunch.
In the late afternoon, visit the “white towns”, typical villages producing all kind of handicrafts. Visit to a local Ceramic Handcraft Workshop to watch the process. Then arrive in Granada, accommodation and free evening and night in your hotel.

Day 6 : Granada-Mombacho volcano-Léon

Leave Granada, we first will go to visit the Mombacho Natural Reserve. we will drive to the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve. A Jeep or truck ride will take us to the top. We will go through coffee plantations to the cloud forest, which offers exceptional sites to discover its flora and fauna. We will walk around one of the craters and discover amazing views! Lunch in a typical restaurant on a private island or in town. After lunch, transfer to Leon located 60 miles north of Managua, and accommodation in your hotel in the centre of the city. Free afternoon to visit the city and its main monuments.
Optional today: Canopy Tour (top tree trail) in the Mombacho volcano.

Day 7 : Leon-Cerro Negro volcano-Boiling Mud at San Jacinto-Managua

After breakfast go for an adventure day to discover one of Nicaragua’s monsters: Cerro Negro active volcano. Born in 1850, it is one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Cerro Negro “Black Mount” is the most recent of a group of four very young cinder cones in the central Maribios. Last big eruption was August 1998…
Hiking to the top takes less than an hour, a sort of trail has been made in the rocks and volcanic ashes. Temperature can be very hot as there is no vegetation at all, ranges between 30 and 42-48 Celsius (according to season; once you hike the breeze makes it easier) and the overwhelming view once we reach the active crater will be the reward you had ever imagined, sulfur coming out from many places, crater and also from the shores (many crevasses). From the top, you will also observe the crater of Telica, another active volcano, as well as the Pacific ocean, 20 miles away. After a walk around the crater we will hike down and drive back to the City of Leon. There, after a delicious lunch, we’ll go to San Jacinto and observe the boiling mud and thermal waters
take our way south to the city of Managua Accommodation in your hotel in Managua to spend the last night. Free evening.

Day 8 : Managua-Managua airport

Transfer to Managua international airport, 2 hours before your flight departure. End of our services.
