One of our favourite ecolodges it is located in San Juan river, between San Carlos and el Castillo. to get there from Managua you have to board the domestic flight to San Carlos; (45 minutes flight). San Carlos is the capital city of the Rio San Juan County. This area was once known as the Gold Route to California and is really worth the trip for those who want to see birds, wildlife and an untouched nature. The visit to el Castillo is very interesting too, including a fortress built by the Spanish in the 18th Century, to resist the English, Dutch and French pirates.
The hotel is located right in front of the river, one and a half hour boat distance from San Carlos and 30 minutes from el Castillo. Quite basic (made of woods and bamboo) but the staff takes well care of guests and will make your stay most enjoyable!
Note: you have to be aware that you are in a remote area, and weather is generally humid and infrastructure/services are basic.
We like: Location, helpful staff and good food. Various activities to enjoy nearby, ideal for 2-3 nights. It is recommended to combine the Rio San Juan with a visit to Solentiname archipelago. Can also be accessed by los Chiles, Costa Rica.
